Peterlee Sunday League: New Hesledon the home-town heroes in derby final clash

Murton New Hesledon lifted the Second Division League Cup with a hard-fought final victory over Seaham Marlborough.

Watched by a crowd of more than 300 at at Murton Welfare last Friday, the staying power of New Hesledon saw them come out on top in an action-packed clash with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Liam Appleby and star man Gavin Hoggarth.

Dan Cahill shone in vain for Marlborough.

Both sides are still fighting it out for promotion.

Dawdon Welfare Park were far too strong for Horden Cricket Club as they cruised into the John & Pat McManus Memorial Cup semi-finals with a 12-1 win.

Six-goal Robbie Bird led the way, backed by goals from Paul Atherton (2), Jack Walker, Tom Price, Andrew Beer, and sub Wes Smith.

Shotton Builders Warehouse were run ragged by Premier side Horden CW Supporters Club in their Tommy Burrell Memorial Cup semi-final and went down 4-1.

Bob Taylor, John Williams, Scott Davidson and Jonathan Monaghan sent Supporters into the final against Easington Lane WMC or Dawdon Welfare Park.

Star man Bradley Beeston netted Shotton’s consolation. Craig Harbord shone for Horden.

Easington CIU look safe from Premier Division relegation after edging a vital 3-2 win over bottom club Thornley Harrys Bar, who have it all to do now to avoid the drop.

Stephen Briggs, Thomas Goundry and Graham Hornsby gave CIU all three points , despite replies from Lee Westgarth and John-Ross Thubron. Chris Hall starred for CIU, Harrison Hancock for Thornley.

Carl Thomas’s brace and an effort from substitute Stephen Turner steered Murton Park View home 3-0 at lowly Easington Lane WMC.
